PostSubject: Portrait Photography, What kind of lens?   Sat May 23, 2009 12:50 am

Humans are beautiful!
Thus for portrait photography, what type of lens is good for a camera with crop factor of 1.5

I am very noob to such portrait shoots and I would like to venture into it.

Here are what i think which might be good...

1) 50 mm F1.8 (75 mm)
2) 60 mm F2.8 (90 mm)
3) 16-80 mm F3.5-4.5 (24mm-120mm)

and any other lens you think its nice? Please comments~ need help from pros!

My best bet would be 50 mm F1.8, cuz its good for 2/3 shoots with a nice blur background, but the face might be abit distorted... 60mm which tuns into 90 mm might be better to bring out contours of a face, ie nose isn't too fat, ears isn't too small like 50 mm? What do you think?

nifty fifties are always good ( and cheap too! ), on any DSLR system,
don't think so much about crop factor, just buy and use! =D

Its entirely up to you.. For me, I either use my cui 18-55mm lens or my 50mm lens to take portrait shots and it comes out pretty good~~

Like what jeremy said, dun bother about the crop factor..

for nikon DX cams get the 35mm f/1.8 which is about 50mm on a FX

if u dun mind the crop factor then...

85mm f/1.4
105mm f/2
50mm f/1.4 is too ma fan if u want the whole face to be sharp...

and f/1.2 lens are too WTF at 1.2

Thx for the heads-up..

35 f/1.8 is for full body portrait? If i were to take in a studio, i probably go with a 105mm f/2.8 or so...

How about during an event? What lens do u use Togu-sensei? still a 35 f/1.8?

I plan to get a 50 f/1.7 (minolta goes with f/1.7, YAY) for cosplay events, is it a good idea? haha... Kit lens just CMI!

I think the 18-70mm is a $ saver and really efficient lenses for both portraits and sceneries. Since you can use one lens for two purpose, it really take the load off your back.. or you can try those canon f/1 MF lens!!! haha

18-70 is f/3.5 to 5.6 right?

when u need the bokeh, 50mm f/1.8 is like the cheapest lens.

I would recommend 50mm 1.4/1.8
Up to your budget. For Nikon, If I'm right the 1.4 is sharper than the 1.8.
50mm Quite comfortable for me.
